La Plaça del Diamant Bookcover

A bookcover design based on La Plaça del Diamant, a catalonian literature classic. The story is about an abusive marriage during Spain's Civil War.

I wanted to depict that moment, which, in Natalia’s mind, might have been idyllic, when, dressed in white, she begins to transform into Colometa as she dances with Quimet in the Plaza del Diamante all night long. Around her, we see the bars of a cage that hasn’t been drawn yet, but which is beginning to enclose Natalia as she can’t tear her gaze away from Quimet’s eyes. We don’t see Natalia’s face; the angle is similar to that of a subjective shot, which allows us to put ourselves in her place. For his part, Quimet strikes a dashing pose, projecting power as he lifts his chin and smiles confidently while pressing against Natalia’s back a sign of what he’ll do behind the facade. It’s the same confidence with which, in the first episode, he assured Natalia they’d be married in less than a year, creating his glittering cage of doves. To make the visual interplay clearer, just as Natalia failed to see the warning signs in Quimet, on the back cover we find another cage, this one drawn, enclosing a solitary, agitated dove.
Just as Natalia will find herself trapped within her marriage, where she will also be confronted by pigeons that her husband brought into the house without telling her pigeons that Natalia will have to care for, with no say in the matter. Throughout the play, these pigeons will torment Natalia until the day of Quimet’s death.
